About the opportunity

Reporting into the COO, the General Counsel and Company Secretary will lead the Legal division within Modica while being supported further by an incredibly talented and committed Senior Leadership team. This newly created in-house position will give you the opportunity to use your previous legal expertise, commercial acumen, and highly attuned emotional intelligence in a relatable, transparent and effective manner that align to and positively impact both the operational and strategic directives of Modica. To be successful in this role you will:

  • Provide quality day-to-day legal counsel across the organisation
  • Proactively partner with wider business units requiring legal expertise and advice
  • Oversee the maintenance of Group statutory records and manage the distribution of Board papers, own the minute taking process for all Shareholder and Board meetings and file all relevant documentation  
  • Create and enhance existing systems and procedures to drive further growth and streamline processes to optimise efficiency across the organisation
  • Initiate, champion and challenge business transformation projects while removing barriers wherever possible
  • Ensure Modica complies with all privacy principles in the Privacy Legislation for jurisdictions where Modica operates
  • Manage the internal legal team and establish a strong relationship with our external counsel  
  • Contribute to the development of Modica’s strategic direction and overall leadership as part of the Senior Leadership Team.  

About you

You have a passion for providing high quality advice and actively engaging in a positive and proactive manner with all internal and external stakeholders. You can translate complicated legal jargon in a way that brings reality to the situation and while being self-directed, self-motivated, and adaptable in your approach, you recognise you are a contributing Senior Leadership Team member. You will be articulate, resilient, proactive, personable and have the ability to champion and challenge those you work with in a positive and well-meaning manner. Fast pace and high growth environments excite you; leadership, team contribution and success empower you and delivery is your kryptonite. Your experience includes:

  • A minimum 5 years' work experience in a professional services/commercial environment  
  • Demonstrated knowledge in general counsel
  • Proven comprehension of commercial legal principles with the ability to identify legal and commercial risks and issues
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills  
  • An innate ability to lead and develop a team while motivating and inspiring others
  • Exceptional organisation and planning skills adept at multi-tasking and prioritisation  
  • The ability to influence and build robust relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • A legal degree and eligibility to hold a practicing certificate
