About the role

We’re not looking for someone who is “just a People Manager” to sit in meetings - we need an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of our finance function. You’ll play a key role in ensuring the financial health of our $50m business, delivering accurate, timely, and investor-ready reporting while building robust, scalable processes that support continued growth.

Working closely with the CFO, you’ll provide the confidence behind the numbers - ensuring strong data integrity, enabling better decision-making across the business and driving operational discipline and process optimisations within the finance team.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll balance commercial understanding with technical execution. You’ll need to understand the ‘why’, but your real strength will be in the ‘how’ and bringing structure, clarity, and consistency to everything from cross-border tax compliance through to NZ IFRS and multi-entity financial reporting, keeping our books audit and due diligence ready at all times.

We operate as a genuinely collaborative team - no silos, no “that’s not my job.” Everyone steps in where needed, and as Financial Controller, you’ll be right there in it. Whether it’s building processes, supporting the team, or getting into the weeds when required, you’re comfortable staying close to the numbers and doing what it takes to keep things moving.

Day-to-day you would be

• Taking total ownership of AU/NZ tax compliance across all tax types (GST/BAS, FBT, Income Tax, PAYE/PAYG, RDTI, State Payroll Taxes)
• Delivering robust month-end processes with high-standard work-papers and balance sheet reconciliations - no "plugs", just clean data
• Actively driving aged debtors and payables management to protect our margin and liquidity
• Working alongside your team in our flat organisational structure - you don't just oversee; you collaborate and do
• Mentoring and developing junior team members while setting technical standards
• Preparing board and shareholder packs and ensuring the finance team offer investor-grade reporting with granular business segment understanding
• Building automated workflows and driving increased efficiency across all our financial processes.
• Keeping Modica’s payroll, tax and financial records audit and diligence ready at all times.
• Supporting budget-setting, cash-flow forecasting and financial analysis processes for the business.

Skills and experience we are looking for

• CA qualification - essential
• Expertise in AU/NZ mid-market or start-up environments in tech/cloud/CPaaS segments
• Comfortable operating in fast-moving, mid-market or growth environments
• You’re a hands-on operator; you don’t just oversee, you fix, build, and improve
• Strong across the full finance spectrum - from tax and financial reporting to investor-readiness and financial analysis
• You take an uncompromising approach to data quality and integrity.
• Confident leading and developing teams and setting standards, including across remote environments
• You’re energised by the technical side of finance - reconciliations, workpapers, compliance - and take pride in getting the detail right
• Proficient use of the latest cloud-based accounting systems suited to a mid-market firm (i.e. Xero, Spotlight Reporting and Consolidations alongside their wider add-on ecosystem) are a must in this rule.
