Sender ID As A Service

To help protect Australians from SMS scams and increase consumer trust, the Australian Government has introduced a mandatory national SMS Sender ID Register and we are the second message provider in Australia to have received certification.

From 1 July 2026, only registered SMS Sender IDs will display branded names. Unregistered sender IDs will default to "Unverified" damaging trust, lowering open rates, hurting campaign performance and potentially impacting your brand reputation.

The Modica Sender ID as a Service offer allows businesses to register, manage, and protect their SMS sender identities (like “BrandBrand” or “ABCBank”) across multiple mobile networks.

What is a Sender ID?

A Sender ID is an 11 character alphanumeric string that is placed over the top of the Mobile Number. It is the name or number that appears as the ‘from/ field when a user receives an SMS. It is  typically a company name or a service that the company provides and is a way for your recipients to easily distinguish your company as the originator of the SMS. It can be:

  • Alphanumeric (e.g., BillCo, YourBank)
  • Short code (e.g., 67910)
  • Alphanumeric Mask (e.g., +61444123456)

Many countries require businesses to register Sender IDs to prevent spoofing, phishing, or fraud. This is especially important in:

  • Banking
  • Logistics
  • Healthcare
  • Government services

New ACMA Requirements for Sender IDs

What is changing? From 1 July 2026, all alphanumeric sender IDs used to send SMS to Australian mobile numbers must be registered with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Messages sent using an unregistered sender ID will be disrupted and labelled “Unverified” before delivery.
How do you register?

Non-Australian aggregators (“international partners”) are able to register their customers’ sender IDs via Certified Telcos. Modica is currently registering to become a Certified Telco via ACMA and expects registration to be complete shortly.

To be an international partner of Modica you will be required to accept a contract addendum with Modica (this is a requirement of the standards) that we will provide to you prior to registration.

It is important to note, the new rules require you to have a direct relationship with the entities you wish to register. Please contact us so we can support you through this process.

Key dates

Date Change
From 1 December 2025 Customers can begin submitting Sender ID registration requests to Modica. We will provide you more information on how to do this before 1 December.
Early 2026 or before (upon ACMA activation) Modica will begin registering submitted Sender IDs directly into ACMA’s national Register.
1 July 2026 All Sender IDs must be registered to avoid disruption or “Unverified” labelling.

Sender ID Fees, Requirements, and Next Steps

Are there fees? Registering sender IDs may incur an initial and ongoing annual charge. We recently attained Sender ID certification from ACMA. This positions us to best support your customers - particularly those without an Australian Business Number (ABN).
How to Prepare Now

You can prepare in advance for a smooth transition to the new register by taking the following steps.

1. Review your customers’ sender IDs Review the sender IDs currently in use by your customers and determine which ones they intend to register.

Ensure the customers have a direct relationship with you.

For the sender IDs you wish to register, check to make sure it meets the following requirements:
- Be 2–11 characters
- Contain only ASCII characters 32–126
- Not be numbers-only
- Not contain the word “Unverified"
- Not start or end with a space or underscore * - - Not include prohibited words (e.g. “Verify”, “Notice”, “Banking”, “Alert”) published by ACMA Not contain a word or words that are offensive, deceptive or misleading

Your customer must also have a valid use case for the sender ID. This means the sender ID must match (or be a contraction, abbreviation, acronym, or initials of) their business name, domain name, or trademark. If you are unsure which sender IDs are active on your account, we can provide a full list.

2. Prepare Supporting Information You should start gathering the information and documentation that will help support your senderID registration (this is the information in step 1 above). You can contact us if you have questions about what specific information you may need.
